Zorzal Terroir Único Malbec 2015

$251.40 (per Case)

Price per Bottle: $20.95

Rating: 90 from Robert Parker

The Terroir Único Malbec was described to me as a cherry and violet juice spiced up with cracked pepper. There was a cold maceration to extract those wild fruit aromas and then the fermentation was carried out with indigenous yeasts in cement vats at low-ish temperatures. The wine matured in cement vats before bottling, and never saw any wood. Juicy, silky and very drinkable with polished, sweet tannins and very good length, the palate reveals purity, a sense of harmony and subtle balance that is amazing for a wine of this price. Unbelievable value!

Zorzal is renowned for having state-of-the-art technology in crushing, fermentation and ageing. In order to achieve natural wines of the highest quality, the winery was designed on four levels to transport grapes and wines by gravity, without the use of pumps. At the same time, the winery has an automatic system of temperature control from New Zealand, which can be operated by internet from anywhere in the world. In their search to get the best out of the Gualtallary terroir, the Michelini brothers are constantly innovating processes, and this has involved bringing in roll fermenters and egg-shaped vats, in addition to introducing staggered harvesting and micro-vinifications in casks.    Gualtallary, where Zorzal wines come from, is in one of Argentina’s most outstanding vine-growing valleys, the Uco Valley. Gualtallary is situated at 1,350 metres above sea-level in the highest vine-growing zone in the Province of Mendoza, at the foot of Tupungato volcano, one of the highest peaks in the Andes. This zone is characterized by its combination of altitude, alluvial soils, sunny days, low rainfall and wide temperature range. The combination of cool climate and chalky soils gives us wines with great structure and delicious acidity.
