In the Oak Knoll district of Napa Valley, Trefethen is one of a small handful of family wineries remaining in California’s best-known and most celebrated wine growing region. Since the 1960’s, the family winery has been integral in the evolution of the Napa Valley as one of the world’s truly iconic terroirs—becoming an important source for some of Cali’s highest quality and sought-after estate wines. Trefethen can proudly boast that they’ve never purchased a single outside grape, with 100% of the fruit coming from vineyards they own and farm. Today, their estate includes: 63 vineyard blocks, growing nine varieties, on 10 rootstocks, and 49 grape clones (13 Chardonnay and 10 Cabernet Sauvignon). This continued emphasis on diversity, growth, and constant improvement is an excellent indication that Trefethen Family Vineyards’ future will be every bit as dynamic and relevant as its storied past.
Cab Sauv (55%) and Petit Verdot (23%) provide the backbone for this lovely blend. Malbec (13%) brings color, red fruit characters and a hint of floral. Merlot (8%) adds a lively spice and herbal character with Cab Franc (1%) offering finesse and a peppery perfume. Aromas of lush, summer blackberries, cassis, complemented by white pepper, clove, and baking spices are framed by sweet vanilla oak. Juicy, ripe, black cherry and blackberry flavors excite the palate, and the wine finishes long, wrapped in cedar, cinnamon, and clove.
