Sant’Antioco, placed in the southwest corner of Sardinia, this tiny island, whose area does not exceed 108 square kilometers, in addition to being exquisitely beautiful, produces excellent wine. Like most of the islands in Italy, it is made up of volcanic rocks and limestone: protected by the mistral wind and the east wind by the imposing bulk of Sardinia, it has a very dry climate. Its vineyards are very small plots of land under vine, tiny vineyards as grape gardens of which the varietal emperor is the now famous Carignan Sulcis and more recently, the white Vermentino. The winemakers prune with religious wisdom, disciplined and obedient to strict production rules, but reassuring in the extraordinary quality of the wine that results. The vineyards of Sant’Antioco do not extend over 450 hectares and some hectares of vineyard vegetate on their own rootstock and boast centuries-old age: you get up to 150 years and beyond. Very little rain, in Sant’Antioco: 400-500 millimeters of annual rainfall. There is so much sun, an extraordinary brightness and a blue sky kept clear from light mistral winds.
